Origins

The company was founded in 1917 and its early years were a mirror of Japan's economic growth. In the first half of its existence, the company produced products to meet the demands of modern and contemporary urban housing. To do this, it used the country's first tunnel kiln to produce ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, allowing for greater efficiency and consistency.

The company began expanding its operations overseas in the late 1980s in order to profit from new markets and sales opportunities. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and sell other manufacturers' products to enhance its own line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and expanded the firm’s global market share.

In the 1990s, Toto began to concentrate on research and development of water-related appliances. It also upgraded its system of distribution to better serve customers and improve profit. Discography

With a name as evocative as Asia, you would expect the group to be prog kings and queens however, it's actually a fairly simple rock group. The band was initially a four-piece and released two albums in 1979, the self-titled debut album and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a wide musical background, but their biggest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, but it was not without its difficulties. The record companies placed Toto under pressure to release an album that was a success or else they would pull them. Toto was able to achieve this with the help from the smash hit "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery owes a lot to their prior experience since the members had been session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior the group. The album begins hard with songs like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR tunes that slowly creep into your head. The album also has some more mellow, jazzy tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distorted AOR and should sound like a complete flop, but works amazingly well.

After Toto IV The band's fortunes took a turn to the downside. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band was through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in after he was charged with drug abuse. the band continued as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. However, the band had a successful chart-topping album in 1992, Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

A new studio album followed just a few months later and the band embarked on a world-wide tour in support of it. In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. The album was released in 2001 as a duo album titled Then and Now. It was the first album by the band without one single track titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".
